So that was the Scottish Rally Championship end of season
report was it? Thankfully we were spared the insightful personal opinions of the
two main presenters, and thankfully what words of wisdom they did utter were
based on information supplied by those who know better, i.e. the SRC media advisory
team.
Way back in the ‘good old days’ we used to complain about
the dulcet tones of Alan Douglas laid over the action, but at least Alan knew
what he was talking about. He navigated for the likes of Andrew Cowan and Neale
Dougan and could explain the inner workings of the sport to the viewers without
making them feel like school kids. There was less in-car stuff then because
digital cameras hadn’t been invented so there was more external action, more
scenery and more long shots so you could see the flow.
That’s not to say past reports were better, they were
different, and used the technology available at the time. Whether the new stuff
is better is a matter of personal opinion. Cine film versus the digital age.
But last night’s pictures were good (if short), especially
that one of ‘Rollover Roy’ cheerily displaying his ‘OK’ board. If anything sums
up the sport that is it – smiling through adversity.
Oh, and one more thing. I think we should all chip in and
buy Euan Thorburn a joke book for his Christmas. He needs something to cheer
him up.
