Speaking of World Championships, did you know there is actually a competition called the ‘World Scotch Pie Championship’? Last year it was won by J B Christie of Airdrie with The Little Bakery from Dumfries in second place and Wishaw’s Denholm Bakers were third.
Last week in Dunfermline, the 15th running of this annual competition held its initial assessment of entries (over 453 last year!) to create a shortlist of finalists who will now go forward to the last rounds of the competition. Winners will be announced in January.
A team of 50 judges, and a small number of pie lovers, with Head judge Robert Ross in charge, conducted the first tasting and assessment, but the team was joined by a rather special guest judge. And if any of you don’t recognise him – then you weren’t there! The shirt’s a dead giveaway!
All I’ve got to do now is get myself on to that judging team, cos as we all know, my idea of a well balanced diet is a Scotch pie in each hand.
