Once again I’m indebted to the Volkswagen boys (and
girls) for this latest fascinating fact. As you know the ever vigilant Scroots
keep a wary eye on all cars and crews and have been known to bring out the
scales on occasion to ensure compliance.
On an event like Wales Rally GB this
can be particularly contentious when it comes to the question of ‘ballast’.
Cars regularly return to the Service Park at the end of the day carrying rather
more than when they set off. This has nothing to do with the on-event team
catering.
After Sebastien Ogier’s car had left service the great piles
of muck left behind looked like an elephant’s outside loo. Anyway, the team
weighed the stuff, and it totalled 28 kgs – that’s nearly 62 lbs in real money!
