Road - Help, Murder, Polis!

Enough of all this electric commuter nonsense, what about a 'proper' electric vehicle? Something that would suit Dirty Harry or Martin Riggs?

With all the subtlety, softness and flowing lines of an American Humvee, this is the result of the Los Angeles Design Challenge 2012 which sought designs for a ‘Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025’.

And just when you’d think they’d have more sense, the normally staid and sensible Germans decided to build their own. Taking the police vehicle as a basis, the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio in Carlsbad, California, was let loose building a full-size civilian version derived from the current G class off roader.

Power for this monster is unconventional. That ‘roof rack’ thingy on the roof doubles up as a water tank which passes water to the ‘hydro-tech converter’ for the hydrogen fuel cells. The storage units for the electricity generated in this process are housed behind the side skirts and will propel the vehicle through four wheel-hub motors.

The engineers reckon this device will have a range of about 500 miles and it sits on monstrous 20 inch wheels.

Now be honest. Range Rover? Land Cruiser? Or one of these?
