Regular tarmac runner James Gibb reckons he
will have to get his head into gravel mode ahead of tomorrow’s Dayinsure Wales
Rally GB National event, although there are some who reckon that will be easy
as his heid’s fu’ o’ stanes anyway! Seriously, he and Charley Sayer-Payne are
looking forward to the experience and going for a finish.
Coincidentally, he
introduced me to one of his new sponsors, a certain Alex Stevens who owns and
operates ‘kilmarnockcampers’ in Ayrshire. Turns out he used to rally a 1.6 Talbot
Sunbeam in the 70s and early 80s. He was obviously quite quick winning the
class regularly, but had problems with his rear axle breaking. Des O’Dell
phoned him and asked why his results were so mixed and Alex told him, so Des
sent him up a ‘works’ axle. It was from an Argentinian built Avenger estate car
which the works cars used at the time. Problem solved.
