Today’s usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Junior Rally was won
by Peter Bennett and Arthur Kierans, but only after a close fought battle with
Finlay Retson and Andrew Falconer. At the halfway point of the 10 stage event
Retson had a 1 second lead over Bennett but on the second half of the rally, the
young Irishman “took a few risks” to seize the lead to win by 14 seconds.
Zak Hughes in his second season of Junior rallying finished
third ahead of Philip White on what turned out to be a very tricky event.
Overnight rain had left the stage surfaces wet and very slippery in places while
intermittent rain showers during the day ensured that conditions were never
totally dry.
For many of the youngsters it was the first time they had
contested a ‘proper’ stage rally with genuine road stages, ‘public road’ sections
and the use of Safety Route Notes. Even so they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience
and the challenge, even those who didn’t quite make it to the end in one piece!
Top seed Josh McErlean was sidelined early on when an ECU
failed and Michael McGarrity had a one sided encounter with a bale bigger than
his Citroen!
