Rally - The Gallowegian

I spent a bit of time thinking about this before sharing it with you, but having sought permission I took a photo at yesterday's funeral. Through the rain streaked glass can be seen Robin Christie's hat and the steering wheel from his Chevette. Lovely thought, and very touching. Long before Indiana Jones and Crocodile Dundee made the drover's hat fashionable, the Gallowegian cut an unmistakable figure in his weathered and frayed headgear.

Many visitors to the Scottish Rally Championship and other events over the years have often remarked on the friendly atmosphere which is somehow at odds with the fierce competition on the stages. That's down to folk like Robin and other characters who make this sport what it is. It's not just about the cars and the action, it's the personalities who add banter and laughter all the way. He'll certainly be missed.

As for yesterday, all it needed was a Land Rover in the back to complete the ensemble! R.I.P. Robin.

Rally - Citroen signs Meeke

Citroen has signed up Kris Meeke on a 3 year deal to help test and develop their new WRC contender - with a few rally outings thrown in!

10:30 - Masonhill Crematorium Ayr, KA6 6EN

On the A77 at Ayr, At Holmston Roundabout take the exit on to the A70 signposted Cumnock, Dumfries, Crematorium. Pass Dobbies Garden Centre on the left and then turn right to the Crematorium (signposted)

15:00 – Memorial Service at Mochrum Church.

Main Street, Mochrum, DG8 9LU

( 2 miles north of Port William )

Tea & crumpets at Monreith Big House afterwards.

No black Ties

No flowers

Rally - The Bears

Deep in the heartlands of the once proud and industrial thriving conurbation of Lanarkshire, where the bings lie dormant and the steel works are lifeless, where Waitrose fears to tread and the Lidls are packed like a home game league cup decider, life continues to cling to a precarious existence.

As Winter draws in, some unusual nocturnal activity was spotted last night around a quaint watering hole and feeding station in Stonehouse. There lying in wait in the car park across the road from the ‘Indian Times’ lurked a fervent wildlife watcher, looking suspiciously like David Attenborough, crouched in the rhododendrons, watching a variety of noisy and winter-coated two legged shapes shambling towards the illuminated doorway seriously intent on stocking up the fat layers for winter hibernation.

After the bitter dejection of events surrounding the McRae Rally in October, the disappointment has been replaced by a sense of optimism for the new year. If anyone thought The Bears would be down then beware the arrival of a new rallying season. And if you do hear a growl in the woods next year it might not be a BDA - it might just be a Lanarkshire grizzly clearing its throat and hungry for action. So take care, may the forests be with you.

Or as The Bears would have it, no nan too sweet, no pakora too much, no onions too nippy, no curry too hot - and never enough beer to quench it.

Fit for purpose. There are some things in life which look just right, some which look a bit odd although acceptable and some which shouldn’t be allowed to see the light of day!

Rally - Lovin' it!

Love is in the air --- intake. Sorry, couldn’t resist this one, but some folk’s love for their car can be a bit obsessive and excessive. Or perhaps, if V8s make rally cars growl, what makes them grunt? Puts a whole new perspective on dogging, eh?
