Rally - Minted Polo

Ahead of the Monte next week, Volkswagen has released pics of its latest 315-hp Polo R World Rally Car and its new colour scheme, with Motorsport Director Jost Capito explaining:  “If you don’t go forwards in motorsport, you go backwards. When it comes to technical development, you simply cannot afford to let up for a single second. Although we won some laurels in 2013, we have certainly not rested on them.  The manufacturers in the World Rally Championship agreed not to homologate any new World Rally Cars for the 2014 season.”

“Despite this, we tried to take full advantage of the options still available to us. Many detailed aspects of the 2014 Polo R WRC have been further developed since we made our debut twelve months ago. Every single member of the team cannot wait to find out where we stand compared to the strong competition we will face from Citroën and Ford, as well as our new opposition at Hyundai.”

“Besides optimising chassis components and new set-up variants for the drive train, the priority for the engineers was to improve the stability of the car and they have installed a new software version for the on-board electronics.”

“As well as the pure performance, a major plus in 2013 was the reliability of the Polo R WRC. In 13 World Championship rallies – three with two cars and ten with three the works team did not suffer any engine damage. There was just one technical fault: a loose connection in the electronics.”

In other words, the team which set the pace last year shows no signs of letting up – worrying times for all the others, eh?

Rally - Shirt shoppers

Just ahead of this week’s Autosports show and next week’s Monte Carlo, guess who was in France getting kitted out in their new gear and picking up their ‘company car’ for the year?

Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle were having their team photographs taken in France (wonder if Slater’s has a branch in Versailles?) ahead of the new season. I bet their mammies will be furious - the shirts look as though they haven't even been ironed!

This is going to be a tricky one for the British/Irish duo, and perhaps their biggest threat will not come from Volkswagen, Ford or Hyundia, but their Norwegian/Swedish team mates, Mads Østberg and Jonas Andersson.

At 26 years of age, Mads has actually competed in more WRC events than 34 year old Kris. In 65 outings, Mads has finished on the podium six times and won once in Portugal whereas Kris has contested only ten rounds although he previously competed in Citroen’s Junior team and won the IRC series in 2009.

That’s going to put Kris at something of a disadvantage initially, but then he does have age and experience (imagine saying that about someone who’s only 34!) on his side, but then again, Mads is well named!

Anyway, here’s hoping Kris and Paul get off to a flying start next week.

Rally - Tunnocks in film

Here's a tasty wee video treat, just to get you in the mood, ahead of this year's WRC campaign. It features those stars of stage, TV and dinner table, Robert Biscuitbarrel and Chewart Loudly in the Ford Fiestalicious on last year's outings.

So make yourself a cuppa and sit back for six and a half minutes - just make sure you've got a caramel wafer for dunking.

Rally - New GrpN Subaru

JRM Motorsport unveiled its new 280 bhp Group N Subaru Impreza WRX STI at the Autosports Show in Birmingham earlier today. It also announced that Niall McShea has been signed up as test and development driver for the new car. As for the price, they’re not saying – yet!

Since STI (Subaru's motorsport division) ended its World Rally Car programme in 2008, it has continued to support Grp N activities across the world. JRM will help STI to continue these activities by building Subaru vehicles that are modified for the Grp N rally category and by providing an STI special parts sales service.

Kubica’s efforts and eight fastest stage times also earned him the Colin McRae ERC ‘Flat Out’ Trophy which was presented by Marcus Grönholm.

Rally - Collie's First Win

Chris Collie scored his first ever outright rally victory with a win on today's Grant Construction Stages Rally at Knockhill. Stuart Walker put in some seriously quick times over the closing stages but to no avail, Collie kept clear of his fellow Lancer pilot.

"I'm really chuffed with that," said Chris, "Stuart and Lee (Hastings) have more tarmac experience than me so I was really pleased to be able to hold them off."

Stuart said: "I lost 40 seconds on the first two stages of the day pushing the car over the Finish line and just couldn't pull it all back, but that's rallying."

Lee Hastings was reasonably pleased with third just failing to catch Walker by a second at the finish: "If it hadn't been for that off on the first stage and then we had a strong smell of petrol inside the car on the fourth stage which was worrying, till Mark (his co-driver) admitted - that might have been me, I forgot to put the petrol cap on!"

Ross Hunter finished fourth as Gary Adam lost time on the final two runs with a gearbox that didn't like changing down although it was fine going up through the gears. That meant Iain Wilson finished sixth, still an incredible result in the wee Nova, which had a leaky gearbox despite ongoing repairs.

At least the snow stayed away, despite ever threatening skies, but it was cauld, damp and gey dreich - just like Monte Carlo but without the sunshine!

Leaderboard after 8 (of 8) stages:
1, Chris Collie, 40m 48s
