Rally - Ford in Poland

Mixed fortunes in the M-Sport Ford camp at the end of Day 1 in Poland with Ott Tanak in fourth place and Elfyn Evans on the wrong side of the top ten in eleventh.

Elfyn Evans and Daniel Barritt were initially involved in an intense battle for the top-five, but his fortunes took a dive in the afternoon loop.

Opting for five of Michelin's soft compound tyres, he suffered the same issues as team mate Ott Tänak. With little traction, he was caught out under braking 30 kms into SS7 – overshooting into a field and losing more than 30 seconds to the leading pack.

Elfyn said: "I think it's fair to say that we made a fairly major mistake when selecting tyres for this afternoon. Half way through the long one [SS7] we already knew that was the case and the tyres had started to go off. Then I got slightly caught out in a braking point and with so little grip had a big overshoot into a field. There was no grip in the last 10 kilometres and we really lost a lot of time. When we saw the condition of the tyres we knew there was nothing we could do. We just had to get back to service with four tyres on the car.”

Rally - Meeke on a roll

Some events start with a bang. Literally. Kris Meeke made it hard for himself on Rally Poland at yesterday’s shakedown when he rolled his Citroen DS3 - four times. Overnight, the Citroen boys did what they do best, build cars under pressure, and Kris was ready for action this morning.

There were eight stages today in two loops with drivers and co-drivers having to make changes to the set-up of their cars and put on tyres at the end of the first loop.

At average speeds of over 130kph, Meeke made a fine start to the day with a third-fastest time. Looking to find the right feeling in the car whilst running second on the road, Mads Østberg adopted a more measured pace to slot into the top 10. By the end of SS5, after a run on one stage of almost 40 kilometres, Meeke held fifth place, whilst  Ã˜stberg was just a few seconds behind.

At Goldap, the crews chose their tyres for the next loop. Kris opted for five Michelin LTX Force S4 soft tyres. Meanwhile, Mads mixed the compounds, with four soft S4s and two hard H4s.

In the very high temperatures, the soft compound tyres reached their limits on the second run on the 39km-long Stanczyki stage. Meeke lost around twenty seconds before spinning on SS8. He ended the day in eighth position. Meanwhile, Østberg’s decision to opt for two hard tyres paid dividends. Despite being handed a penalty for jumping the start on Goldap, the Norwegian moved up the standings and closed to within ten seconds of his team-mate.

At close of play, Kris commented: “It’s always difficult to get the pace right at the start of rallies that are as quick as this. I was nonetheless fairly pleased with my performance this morning when we were fifth. For the second loop, we didn’t make the right tyre choice and we lost a lot of time as a result.”

In the FIA Junior WRC, British driver Osian Pryce leads the standings from the Frenchman Quentin Gilbert and the Italian Simone Tempestini.

Rally - Bogie's Scottish

Rory Young and Steven Clark

That's the main report from the 70th RSAC Scottish Rally in the on-line mag now with Classes to follow and then the usual blethery bits.

Bruce McCombie still leads the ARR Craib Scottish Championship from Jock Armstrong and Mike Faulkner, but Bruce is counting all five rounds so far while both Jock and Mike have scored on four. And with the best 6 results from 7 rounds to count, David Bogie with two dropped scores already faces an almost impossible task to win a sixth Scottish title. If Bogie is to win, the top three need to hit trouble, and as we all know, anything can happen when the stoor starts flying.

Rally - Survey

Some of you who read this drivel on a regular basis may be surprised to receive a strange looking email message in your in-boxes. Taking advantage of a free offer by ‘Survey Monkey’ I have sent out a 7-question survey to around 320 of you. I’d appreciate it if you would have a look before sending it to the bin!

I’m looking for feedback on a proposal to publish a weekly (Scottish) National Newsletter which will be emailed out on Wednesdays (or Tuesdays?) and only available by subscription. This will be in addition to the regular on-line mag content, Blog and Facebook outlets.

The closed circulation of such a newsletter will also allow the printing of ‘news’ items that couldn’t possibly be published in a more publically accessible open forum!

So if you get one of these in your in-box have a wee shufty it will only take a few seconds to complete. Many thanks.
