Mixed fortunes in the M-Sport Ford camp at the end of Day 1
in Poland with Ott Tanak in fourth place and Elfyn Evans on the wrong side of
the top ten in eleventh.
Elfyn Evans and Daniel Barritt were initially involved in an
intense battle for the top-five, but his fortunes took a dive in the afternoon
loop.
Opting for five of Michelin's soft compound tyres, he suffered the
same issues as team mate Ott Tänak. With little traction, he was caught out
under braking 30 kms into SS7 – overshooting into a field and losing
more than 30 seconds to the leading pack.

said: "I think it's fair to say that we made
a fairly major mistake when selecting tyres for this afternoon. Half way
through the long one [SS7] we already knew that was the case and the tyres had
started to go off. Then I got slightly caught out in a braking point and with
so little grip had a big overshoot into a field. There was no grip in the last
10 kilometres and we really lost a lot of time. When we saw the condition of
the tyres we knew there was nothing we could do. We just had to get back to
service with four tyres on the car.”
