Meeke's on form - fingers crossed |
Day 2 (or Day 3 if you count the super special on Thursday evening) is still underway in Argentina at the present time, so a roundup from the end of the day will have to wait till tomorrow morning.
But after 9 stages, with one to go later tonight, there are three Volkswagen Polo WRCs in the top four places. The better news is that Kris Meeke is holding third place in the Citroen DS3 while team mate Mads Ostberg is tenth after damaging a front wheel and suspension. Other goods news concerns young Elfyn Evans holding seventh place in the Ford Fiesta.
There might well have been three VWs in the top 3 places, but the alternator belt came off Andreas Mikkelsen’s car earlier, just easing the pressure on Meeke. And although Jari Matti Latvala leads, Sebastien Ogier is only 30 seconds behind.
Ostberg's flying now |
Thierry Neuville is fifth in the Hyundai ahead of Robert Kubica rounding off the top half dozen in the highest placed Ford. Mikko Hirvonen is still outside the top ten after hitting a wall with his Fiesta on the first full day of rallying.
At the end of the first full day Kris Meeke commented: “It was a fantastic day. It wasn’t always easy because the stages were really difficult. When I saw that Mikkelsen and Neuville had stopped, I eased off a little to hold my position. This afternoon, we went with the soft compound whereas all the other crews opted for hard tyres. I think we drove pretty well, really. Tomorrow, we’ll need to apply the same strategy and make sure we continue to avoid making any mistakes.”
