There is absolutely no reason for publishing this picture
here, other than I like it. It shows Martin Brundle and Bruno Senna ‘competing’
on the 2014 Mille Miglia event last weekend. They were entered in a 1956 ‘Long
Nose’ D-type Jaguar from the Jaguar Heritage collection. Also taking part were
US TV chat show host Jay Leno and Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum in a 1951
Ecurie Ecosse XK 120 plus many others.
This commemorative sporting event can trace its roots back
to a road race first staged in Brescia way back in 1899 and it’s just one of
those iconic motor sporting events that has all of us slevvering at the thought
of it. This year’s event started in Brescia in northern Italy and headed east
for a run down the coast then across to Rome and back up the west coast to the
Brescia finish. A total of 1708 kms over 4 days.
By the way, the entry fee was 7,000 Euros (plus VAT!) but that
included 4 nights’ accommodation and some food along the way, while having a
service crew cost another 3550 Euros, and this is at the ‘cheap’ rates. All you
need after that is a suitable car which must be “those of which at least one
specimen took part in one of the speed editions (1927-1957)” and that won’t
come cheap either!
Makes UK Historic rallying look a positive bargain, eh?
