I thought it was the 1st of April first all over again when I saw this coming across my desk.
Apparently Ford and Heinz are investigating the use of tomato fibres to
develop sustainable, composite materials for use in vehicle
manufacturing. Dried tomato skins could become the wiring brackets in a
Fiesta vehicle or the storage bin in a Transit if it all comes to ‘fruition’!
Get it? Fruition? Tomatoes are a fruit, not a vegetable! Oh, please yourselves.
Anyway, Ford began collaborating with Heinz, Coca-Cola, Nike and
Procter & Gamble nearly two years ago to develop a plant-based
plastic to help reduce the petroleum-based materials currently in use.
This is not as daft as it sounds. Heinz uses more than 2 million tonnes
of tomatoes each year to make its ketchup so it has an awful lot of
peels, stems and seeds left over from the process hence their R&D
folks have been looking into ways of recycling them.
And there
was me thinking the Fiesta ST is a saucy, sexy little motor just because
it’s quick and handles well! Puts a whole new meaning on the term
‘giving it the beans’, eh?
